Creative Modes

Playmaker has 6 creative modes, plus a front page where you can draw with a simple pen tool. Hold B to open a menu that lets you move between modes. In any mode, open the menu to see instructions, erase everything in that mode, or find other menu options.

Paint

"Relax while painting with 15 unique and playful crankable tools. Color with a 1-bit rainbow of shades and patterns, or create your own with stamps."[1]

Controls
  • B to switch between using a cursor/tool, changing the fill color, and changing the painting tool you're using.
  • Cursor mode:
    • Hold up and crank to change tool size
    • Hold down and crank to use tool
    • Hold left or right and crank to move without using tool
  • Open menu to erase, save, or undo

Music

"Turn your Playdate into a synthesizer-backed music box with 15 fantastical instruments. Then turn the crank to perform your masterpiece for family and friends."[1]

Controls
  • B to switch betwen placing notes and choosing sound types
  • Crank or left/right to advance and rewind music box
  • A to place notes
  • Open menu to erase or rewind

Stamps

"Pixelate your ideas and use them across your drawings, stories, faces, and more."[1]

Controls
  • d-pad to move around pixel grid
  • A to change color of pixel: black, gray, white, or transparent
  • Crank or B to change which stamp you're working on
  • Open menu to erase, copy, or paste


Record

"Grab sound with your Playdate's microphone, then bend and twist it with AudioBot and its 8 sound effects like pitch, echo, crush, and more."[1]

Controls
  • d-pad or B to move between dials and buttons
  • A to operate record button (hold down), play/pause button, and forward/backward toggle switch
  • Crank to adjust dials that filter the sound, and volume slider
  • Open menu to erase or save

Blocks

"Snap together a story with 30 built-in block shapes, or design your own stamp blocks. Use shades and patterns to texturize your worlds."[1]

Controls
  • B to switch between dropping blocks, choosing fill color, and choosing block shape
  • Cursor mode:
    • d-pad to move cursor
    • Crank to rotate block
    • A to drop block
  • Open menu to erase or remove backdrop

Dance

"Adjust the stage lighting, set a backdrop, pick an outfit, and... a face?? Then crank your way across the dance floor and into our hearts."[1]

Controls
  • B to switch between controlling dancer, choosing body fill color, and choosing head image.
  • Dance mode:
    • Crank to spin dancer
    • d-pad to move around
    • Open menu to change background lighting, remove backdrop, and change playback speed of music

Interactions Between Modes

Your creations in some modes can appear in other modes:

  • Images from Paint Mode can be the backdrop for Blocks and Dance Modes.
  • Stamps from Stamp Mode can be used as tools in Paint Mode, blocks in Block Mode, or the dancer's head in Dance Mode.
  • Songs from Music Mode play as background music in Dance Mode.
